3 color screenprint on French 100lb cover, 24"x18", 2016
Christopher Xydas is a self-taught artist. His intricate pen drawings are inspired by patterns found in nature. He has received much praise from his Aunt, who says his "doodles" are interesting but feels that he should paint landscapes instead. She will often rotate his sketchbook 360 degrees in effort to find the intended viewing angle before eventually handing the pad back and saying, "You have a lot of patience." His work has been displayed proudly on refrigerators and hung nobly (but upside-down) from one of those vinyl promotional magnets you get from your accountant's office. He was born and resides in Brooklyn, NY. I know all of this because I'm his cat.
Pen and ink is the preferred medium I use to create free-form images. I rarely use a sketch as a guide, choosing instead to make every line a permanent component, for better or worse, it's all subjective. What is born from these lines is largely unplanned, but let's face it -- often times a mollusk.
