This print Conscious/Subconscious is based on a much smaller gouache painting from 2019, which I redrew and repainted for this edition. It is a diagram of the mind, charting the way we conceptualize our conscious and subconscious states as being above or below ground. I’m particularly interested in the subterranean metaphors we use to describe the subconscious, which is hidden, dark, and vast—similar to the labyrinthine tunnels of an underground prison or a volcano’s magma simmering beneath the surface. The piece is part of a larger series of drawings, paintings, and works on metal exploring the ways we visualize the invisible, abstract realm of the mind through metaphor.
Alexandra Zsigmond (b. 1982) is a New York-based visual artist, originally from San Francisco. Her drawings, paintings, and works on metal explore how symbolic and metaphoric modes of thought become encoded into visual lexicons of all kinds. Alexandra is also a curator and designer of exhibitions, magazines, and newspapers, and from 2010-17 was an art director for The New York Times’ Opinion and Sunday Review sections. Currently she is senior art director at The New Yorker. She is a recipient of the Public Scholars Fellowship from Humanities New York in 2015, and has a BA in Philosophy and the Visual Arts from Stanford University. Alexandra is a frequent public speaker and has given talks and workshops on editorial art worldwide.
