I use world building to orient myself in today’s rapidly changing environment. These contemplative spaces take the form of games, simulations, comics, and maps. Each work is the creation of place or artifact, calling attention to how fiction is weaved into our reality. I believe now more than ever we exist on multiple levels and in multiple spaces. We are constantly trying to reconcile these altered realities as we move between the virtual and the analog or the social and the personal. Nothing feels solid. This is why I take an iterative approach to my art practice, the perspective is always shifting and the content is always being recompiled into new formats.
Veronica Graham is a new media artist and printmaker based in Oakland, California. In 2012, she founded Most Ancient, a design studio focused on small press and digital production. Her books have been collected by SFMoMA, MoMA, The New York Public Library, and The Library of Congress. Graham is now designing “Diatribes”, a Virtual Reality haunted house that explores fears about global warming. Her digital projects have been presented at Kala Art Institute, Women’s Studio Workshop, San Francisco Art Book Fair, Printed Matter Inc., and Short Run Seattle. In addition to her own practice, Graham is an active member on SFMoMA’s Games Advisory Board and an arts educator who has taught at San Francisco Art Institute and Creativity Explored.
