Kat Lyons, b. 1991 in Lousiville KY, graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking. She is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY.
Awkward in their performance and existing somewhere between the mundane, beautiful, humorous, and disturbing, the subjects of her paintings speak to the unresolved unease with which women often navigate life. They oscilate between begrudged participation, complacency, and a celebratory autonomy. The covert presence of a spectator, often a specifically male gaze, is revealed through the subject’s physical or situational limitations.
She is interested in how this spectator determines the perdicament of the personified animal, objectified female figure, or anthropomorphized object, themes which have long been imbedded in portraiture and comics. By exploring those histories through personal narrative, she aims to merge the beautiful and grotesque to recognize the entanglement of these seemingly contradictory motifs and their place in the female experience- best revealing themselves through performance, vanity, eroticism, and spectatorship.
