When I Cannot Sing My Heart, I Can Only Speak My Mind is part of a recent series that features text in circular forms. When the circles intersect, the texts of each collide, but rather than have one phrase cover and obliterate the other, I began mixing a third color, a visual overtone, to use at this point of overlap. This way it is possible to read both of the intertwined texts, however abstract their shapes become. In the paintings, I use opaque paint and create the illusion of transparent layers. But the medium of screenprinting allows for the transparent inks to organically create this third color.
