Conflict Arrows 3 is a version of a gouache painting, Conflict Arrows, and is part of a larger series of paintings entitled Crowds that I began in 2013.  I made Conflict Arrows 3 specifically for this silkscreen, as the larger format of the print allowed me to play out the repetition of the pattern and the extent to which the arrow fortresses are deteriorating. For the past 17 years, I have been making detailed gouache paintings in which every image is repeating in some geometric formation. I have long been fascinated by the relationship between the organization of images and the interpretation of their meaning. A crowd is a dynamic subject for this exploration, as the way it is arranged implies or reflects aspects of society. Once an element in an organization is charged with some kind of subjectivity or individuality, then the order governing how these individuals are arranged reflect aspects of harmony and disobedience, and the degree of freedom latent in the system.

Zoe Pettijohn Schade is an artist who works primarily in gouache on paper, and who recently moved to Boston after living for 25 years in Brooklyn, NY. In 2019, her work was featured in “Less is a Bore” at the ICA in Boston, and in the “deCordova New England Biennial 2019” at the deCordova Museum.  She is a 2015 NYFA Fellow in Painting and received a 2012-2013 Fulbright Research Scholars Grant to Paris, to continue her work with a rare collection of 18^th century French pattern paintings at the Bibliothèque Forney, and make a series of original paintings in response. She is represented by Kai Matsumiya Gallery, and her most recent solo exhibition “Shifting Sets” was in March of 2018. Her paintings were also featured in a solo show at the Mona Bismarck American Center for Art and Culture in Paris in 2013.  She has participated in group exhibitions at White Columns, NY, Andrew Edlin Gallery, NY, Jeff Bailey Gallery, NY, Geoffrey Young Gallery in Great Barrington, and the Jones Center for Contemporary Art in Austin, Texas. Other international exhibits include group shows in Mexico City, Berlin, and London. She has co-curated exhibitions at The Teckningsmuseet in Laholm, Sweden and at Senaspace, Radiator Gallery, and Standpipe Gallery in New York, as well as co-curating a group show in Dumbo, Brooklyn entitled “Speakers” comprised of participants in an on going artist lecture series of which she is a co-founder in Brooklyn, New York.  Her work has been discussed in Art Forum, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Bomb Magazine, W Magazine, Purple Magazine, Nylon, The Huffington Post and Hyperallergic.
