I am fascinated by the tension between organic drawing and the linear form of built environments. My pieces balance structure and whimsy as they doodle across the page, mirroring man-made growth and natural decay. The maze motif serves as a framework to play with mediums, styles and themes. For the viewer, the maze is not intended to be a frustrating puzzle, but a place to visit and wander at leisure. The paths encourage intimacy and engagement that a landscape may not.
My red and blue experiments explore detail and texture while also exposing the creation process. In “5 Bicycles”, the initial drawing is laid down in red ballpoint, with the puzzle environment constructed organically. I discover the volume of the shapes as I overlay with blue ink, building rich densities and exciting contrasts. I find the screen print inks merge the colors in a lovely way that is unique to the medium.
