Part of Copeland's "Glyph Series," "Glyph Figure" is comprised of the repetition of partial letters in alternating colors and patterns. Trying to replicate Typewriter Art, these Glyph drawings proved full of opportunities to expand on the original model. Besides being much larger than previous work, they are also Copeland's first giant step into color. Part discipline, part obsession, part endurance, part process. This particular Glyph Figure is also the cover image to Copeland's latest LP, Trogg Modal 2 (DFA Records).
Eric Copeland (b. Brunswick, ME, 1978) is a musician, artist, and writer currently living and working in Palma, Spain. He is a cofounder of the reckless, ongoing Neanderthal band Black Dice since 1997. He has released music on his own since 2006. And he annually publishes a series of obsessive collections under ESL Books. A graduate of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, his focus was on something like "subliminal language," which still guides most of his work. He is currently working on a vandalism of Brave New World, entitled "Demon Portraits."
