Inspired by the early 20th Century symbolist movement and their sensory notions of the invisible world, Sarah Bedford’s “Balancing Act” evokes a dream-like landscape with colorful shapes floating atop an effervescent blue sky. Drawing on her childhood memories of mysterious stacked rocks or “cairns”, made by sheepherder’s on the grassy plateaus of Eastern Montana, she contemplated their strange resemblance to Richard Serra’s basalt sculpture “Afangar” (Standing Stones) on the Island of Viöey in Iceland. Channelling this idea of land art and the duality of form and context, environment and abstraction, masculine and feminine, Bedford created the silkscreen for Kayrock, envisioning her ideal cairn as a personal symbol for cosmic balance in an increasingly unbalanced world.

With her recent solo show of paintings and mono-prints at Mrs. Gallery in 2018, Sarah Bedford has also exhibited in group shows from NY to LA in 2019. She received an BA from Cooper Union, attended the Skowhegan Residency, received the Wallace E Truman Award in painting from the National Academy of Fine Arts as well as a fellowship at the Lower East Side Print Shop in Manhattan. Born on a cattle ranch near Roundup, Montana, she resides in a quiet corridor of Greenpoint, Brooklyn with her family.
